HOW TO MULLET. NAILING A TIMELESS CLASSIC IN 2022

Let’s be honest, mullets have been up there since Achy Breaky Heart was released in 1992.

“Business in the front, party in the back”.

Well, if you have been wandering around any hipster area in the past year or so, you will have noticed an updated take on a timeless classic. The mullet works because it is a gender-neutral style fuelled by a resurgence in our love for all things the 80s and 90s. It’s the perfect co-ord for Gen Z’s fave shopping app Depop and our increasing passion for throwback TV and reboots of 80s cinematic perfection like Cobra Kai and Stranger Things. One of the things we love about the mullet is the limitless possibilities the cut has. From a shag mullet, mullet fades, curly mullet and the super en-vogue short mullet, the variations of this classic look are endless. Think of the practical benefits of a mullet. No hair in your eyes, a warm neck on a cold night…

What is a mullet haircut?

Though the mullet comes in many forms, the basic principle is simple. Hair is cut short on the front and sides, with a longer length on the back. If you get a really good mullet, you can rock it with pride at the next Festival de la coupe mullet in Belgium (yes a festival devoted entirely to the iconic look) . Own it.

How to grow a mullet:

It all starts with having relatively longish hair to begin with. If you haven’t had many haircuts since lockdown, it could be an ideal time for you to get a badass hairstyle. If you start with longer hair, your stylist will have more to work with as they shape your new style. If you have any questions, give us a shout. We would love to talk you through your mullet journey.

Decide which mullet you are going for:

From the shock factor that is the traditional mullet to something more subtle like a modern mullet to the glam mullet reinvented by Miley and the punk statement mullet that Rihanna made look oh so easy, the world is your oyster. Search hashtags on the Gram or go the whole way in and create a Pinterest board analysing the look through the ages and changing our minds for a week. Just us then. From there comes the fun part, book an appointment with a professional and preferably someone who specialises in the mullet so that they can create the desired look. From there just exist, with your mullet, living your best life.

How to style your mullet.

If there was an award for an epic look to low maintenance style, the mullet would deffo be up there as one of the better cuts. The hairstyle itself does most of the work, so in order to maintain your mullet, use your fingers and try some texturising spray or salt spray to really bring out some waves if you are going for the curly mullet. One of the other great things about a mullet is they look BETTER if you haven’t washed your hair for a day or two. That’s where some good dry shampoo will help in between washes. Go wild and have fun.

10 mullets we absolutely love:

The definition of a Hollywood leading man. Patrick Swayze wasn’t just an amazing actor, he was an absolute icon of 80s mullet-mania. This shag mullet is one of many Swayze pulled off during the decade. Heartthrob.

he queen of the mullet resurgence, Miley Cyrus. This is very fitting given the fact that her dad has given so much to the mullet cause over the years. Miley rocks a super-glam pixie mullet (pullet) as cut by her mother, Tish (alongside some coaching from super stylist Sally Hershberger.

Riri has been rocking the mullet for well over a decade and has helped her coin the look “ghetto goth”, which we are very here for. A personal fave was the punk style mullet as has here which has some real effortlessly cool vibes that work well for a coffee dash paired with some shades after a heavy night.

David Bowie. Like everything else during the Ziggy Stardust era, the famous red mullet was iconic and has been copied ever since. With good reason.

Scarlett Johannson. Let’s take it back to 2003. In Da Club and Crazy in love was the soundtrack and Scarlett Johannson debuted this superb flair ended mullet. Gorgeous textures create a timeless look.

Jared Leto has always been one for experimenting with various hairstyles and has never shied away from a mullet. This dapper look was debuted at the London fashion awards and is a super subtle, clean look that requires very little maintenance.

Demi Lovato has nailed a few mullet styles in recent times and often changes the length of the back of the cut as she stitches things up. The super-short fringe and structured style really shows you mean business.

Dolly Parton and her signature mullet. Enough said.

You can’t have a run-down of iconic mullets without mentioning Joan Jett. the legendary I Love Rock and Roll singer blazed a trail with everything she did and her 70s mullet was no different.

K Pop it boy V from BTS is no stranger to a fashion moment, as he shows here with this soft, boy next door mullet which just works. A really low key statement piece.
